PREBIOTICS & POSTBIOTICS: WHAT DO THEY ACTUALLY DO?

When choosing food for our pets, we often start with what we can see. The protein, the vegetables, or the flavours they might enjoy.

But developing a meal goes beyond what is on the surface. Every ingredient has its own role, and when thoughtfully combined, these elements come together to form a more considered meal.

Prebiotics and postbiotics are two components that Delica pays attention to when developing its recipes. But what are they, and why are they included in our recipes?

What Are Prebiotics & Postbiotics?

Prebiotics and postbiotics are components associated with the digestive system, and both are included in selected Delica recipes as part of our approach to nutrition.

Alongside other ingredients and nutrients, they form part of the overall composition of each recipe, reflecting our consideration of digestive health.

Put simply, they represent an approach to food that looks beyond protein and main ingredients alone, taking the composition of the entire meal into account.

What Do Prebiotics Do?

Prebiotics are substances associated with the beneficial microorganisms in the digestive system. They are commonly discussed in the context of supporting gut health.

In Delica's recipes, prebiotics are incorporated alongside other ingredients as part of our approach to nutrition and digestion.

Because choosing food is about more than selecting ingredients for their flavour or nutritional value. It also means considering what happens after a meal is eaten.

What About Postbiotics?

Postbiotics are another component associated with gut health, although their nature differs from that of prebiotics.

When considering nutrition and the way the digestive system functions, Delica incorporates both prebiotics and postbiotics into selected recipes, alongside other ingredients that make up each meal.

Together, they reflect our approach to considering digestion as part of the bigger picture of everyday pet nutrition.

How Are Prebiotics Different from Postbiotics?

The distinction is easier to understand when we look at their relationship with gut microorganisms.

Prebiotics are substances that beneficial microorganisms in the digestive system can utilise, while postbiotics are preparations of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that can provide a health benefit. They are different, but both are discussed in the context of gut health. For pet food, including these components is one way to take a broader view of what goes into every meal.

Why Does Delica Pay Attention to Them?

Because a meal is made up of more than protein alone. Alongside our main ingredients, Delica considers vegetables, superfoods, and other components within each recipe, including prebiotics and postbiotics. This approach is reflected across our range of flavours.

Beef in Gravy combines beef with pumpkin, carrot, and goji berry, alongside prebiotics and postbiotics.

Chicken & Liver with Vegetables brings together chicken, liver, vegetables, and goji berry, complemented by other ingredients in the recipe.

Creamy Salmon Soup and Ocean Fish Mixed in Fish Broth also include prebiotics and postbiotics as part of their respective formulations.

Each recipe has its own ingredients and flavour profile, while sharing the same underlying philosophy: to consider the meal as a whole.

A More Considered Approach to Every Meal

When we choose food for our pets, we are choosing more than a flavour they might enjoy. We are choosing the ingredients, the composition, and the nutrition that become part of their everyday lives.

Prebiotics and postbiotics are part of how Delica approaches that choice.

Because to us, Real Food means more than using real ingredients. It means paying attention to what goes into every meal, and understanding the role each component plays in the food we serve.
